Why pull ups are harder for women

Strict pull ups are a notoriously challenging exercise for anyone, but it seems women particularly struggle to master this skill. Research suggests this may be to do with muscle mass distribution.

Men have greater muscle mass than women on an absolute basis, and women have less muscle mass relative to their weight. This makes it harder to do pulling exercises against gravity.

Women also have a lower percentage of muscle mass distribution in their upper body compared to men. The figures are around 37% upper body muscle mass for women’s, 43% for men.

All these are reasons why women may find it harder to perform a strict pull up… however this exercise can of course be achieved with a bit of hard work and consistency!
